Nurture - Day 14 of the #WordADayChallenge

Today's word is Nurture.

I sometimes get caught up in trying to nurture so many things at once I end up going in circles. I am trying to slow down and nurture a few things or even just one thing at a time so I can see positive results. I am always thinking of the important things that stay on my list of things that need and deserve nurturing: Our son, my husband, our marriage. Those are hardcore absolutes for me. They will always be at the top of the list.

Right now I am nurturing a learning of crochet. This is something that has racked my brain for years. I have had people try to teach me and it just didn't sink in. I am left handed.... most of the time. In a right handed world, I have learned to be almost ambidextrous, using both hands for different tasks. But I think my brain still "sees" things from the left-handed perspective so sometimes what looks simple to other people is confusing to me. Many times, the old trick of sitting in front of someone rather than beside them as they show me how to do something doesn't work.

Several years ago I became a member of a Fiber Guild to nurture my love of fiber crafts. I have learn a lot of really great methods for working with different types of fiber. So when the chance to attend a workshop on crochet came up I jumped at it. It has not been easy. Each Saturday for three weeks I have went and spent several hours trying, failing, trying again, failing agian..... Last week I was almost, ALMOST ready to throw in my crochet hook and figured that this was just going to be something that no matter how much I tried to nurture it and make it grow, was not going to happen. A light bulb literally flickered to life inside my mixed up brain and suddenly I was reading the pattern and being able to complete the stitches! I don't know why it suddenly came into focus and started making sense, but it did. It is slow going and it will take me awhile to be comfortable doing it, but I am commited to nurturing it.

I guess it it is a lesson in not giving up. Or not letting the failures stop you from trying again. If you want something, no matter what it is, it will require you to nurture it. Whether it's a solid relationship, work, a hobby or even yourself. It will only grow stronger if you nurture it and encourage the growth and progress. I try and sometimes succeed, but I will always be a work in progress in this area.
